Biokinetics – Introduction

  • Modern day lifestyles have put the human being at risk with respect to health and chances of survival.
  • One of the highest risks is lack of physical activity as this causes deterioration of the human being’s physical condition which may result in premature death.
  • As a result of this phenomenon the need for a biokineticist service arises.

Biokinetics – Definition

  • The word Biokinetics is taken from the Greek word “BIOS” which means “life” and “KINESIS” which means “movement”.
  • In other words the maintenance of quality through use of physical activity.
  • Biokinetics is a medically recognized professional discipline, applying scientifically based physical activity, to either help disease or to the final phase rehabilitation following the onset of disease.

What is a Biokineticist?

  • A Biokineticist is an exercise specialist who increases a person’s physical condition and the quality of life by means of physical assessment and the prescription of health exercise habits.
  • The Biokineticist is the newest member of the allied medical team who specializes in the preventative medicine and final phase rehabilitation to improve the quality of life through movement.
  • A  Biokineticist is a specialised exercise therapist that functions in professional alliance to health and medicine, and is recognised by and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

What does a Biokineticist do?

  • The prescription of safe physical activity programs.
  • The compilation of rehabilitative exercise programs in conjunction with the doctor and other members of the allied medical team.

An evaluation comprises the following:

  • In the evaluation of the person’s physical status, the Biokineticist uses scientific method and instruments such as a treadmill, a bicycle ergo meter, isokinetic strength dynamometers, pulse frequency monitors, blood pressure apparatus, gas analyzers, lung function machines, etc.
  • Contra-indications to exercise are identified.
  • Body somatotype is determined
  • Posture analysis is done
  • Basic components of fitness is assessed namely:
  • The heart and lung systems,
  • Muscle endurance,
  • Muscle strength,
  • Muscle and  joint flexibility,
  • Speed of movement,
  • Skill,
  • Coordination
  • and body alignment
